Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Matt Zappa is an alum of Berklee College of Music. He is currently the drummer of both the progressive metal band, Protean Collective and the chiptune rock band, Robot and the Wizard. In addition, he is a session musician/clinician and a radio DJ. His early knowledge of music came from listening to big band, hip hop, and Motown, leading to a love of all forms of percussion. He started playing drums at the age of 14, and he immersed himself immediately in the diverse and competitive New England music scene. There, he played in and filled in for bands of many different styles such as funk, rock, hardcore, latin, jazz fusion, and metal.
His early heroes in drumming were Joe Morello, Steve Gadd, Mike Portnoy, Raymond Herrera, Sean Reinert, and Vinnie Colaiuta, but the drummer that changed his view on music was Billy Cobham. He was fortunate enough to receive Cobham’s Spectrum as a gift from a neighbor, which he listened to and studied religiously through his teens. Right away, Matt began drum lessons with the teacher Martin Bernert, who not only taught Matt the fundamentals of the drum set but also gave him the tools to develop his own style.
He continued his education by choosing Berklee College of Music, where his desire to grew as a musician was mentored by Rod Morgenstein, Rick Considine, and Ricardo Monzon. He also gained knowledge as a composer which led him to pursue a film scoring. In college, he met Graham Bacher and Steph Goyer and formed Protean Collective, a progressive metal band that has been a touring act since 2010. Their newest album, “The Red and the Grey,” has received international critical acclaim from such publications as Metal Injection, MetalSucks, and Nefarious Realm. The band has gained notoriety by playing with such groups as Cynic, Scale the Summit, Pain of Salvation, Lesser Key, and Wovenhand. He is also a radio DJ on WEMF’s Citywide Blackout.
